Around the massive Mehrangarh fort, grew the city of Jodhpur protected by a high stone wall with 5 gates as Nagori Gate, Merati Gate, Sojati Gate, Jalori Gate and Siwanchi Gate, and countless bastions. Today, the city has grown on all directions of Mehrangarh Fort with jodhpurites living in suburbs and outskirts connecting nearby villages.

  • Sojati Gate: The walled city of old Jodhpur has main entrance from Sojati Gate on the south which was named on the road that takes to village named Sojat, but now it has been occupied by the busiest commercial centers around it. At the left of circle is the statue of Rajiv Gandhi, this road above takes to nai sarak or new road with many famous and old shops and hotels like Softy and Softy, Janta Sweet Home, priya hotel and many guests houses continued to the biggest shopping thoroughfare and then to the market area, Sadar Bazaar, at the base of the deck tower that marks the centre of Jodhpur. The main food chopati of the city near Sojati Gate is the attraction to foreigners as well as you will find many taste conscious people on this place. Pappu pani puri is famous among all paani puri walas’ while from distance the aroma of special paav bhaji will convince you to go for at least a plate. At times you may also find tikki wala, icecream vendors, south Indian idli dosa wala and many more varieties. Many flower shops you will discover surrounding the shiva temple.

  • Jalori Gate: Another gate is Jalori gate, to the southwest of Sojati Gate along Station Road named as the road leads to Jalore village. It is near to Jodhpur Railway station, outside the station three main roads fan out from a statue of a horseman. Olympic Cinema Road to the far left, leads to the telegraph office. The road directly in front of the statue leads to the Jalori Gate, which is the best way into the old city. Station Road, leading off to the right towards Sojati Gate, is lined with cheap hotels and restaurants. Main Jalori Gate circle has shops of Surya Namakin the one of oldest and delicious mirchi vada server, and many fruit seller and lime water vendors. Also, among the major book providers like buuklo, second hand book depot, book world etc, few are located here.

  • Merti Gate: Waking down to the nai sarak cycle market you may discover an old gate called Merti Gate named as the road leads to the village called Merta. Just before this you will find many namkeen and sweet shops that are there from times when raja used to rule. Though the market is also famous by name cycle market as you will find bicycles of every type for all age groups. Also there is a fish market just one street before it. Merti also has many old bag shops that works as retailers and whole sell dealers.

  • Nagori Gate: One of the hustling bustling place in Jodhpur is nagori gate named on the road leading to nagore village. From the circle goes roads in five different direction, one which is towards the gate takes you inside the city where you may find many jewelry shops, famous city namkeen shops and chai wala. Another road near to it will direct you to back side of Mehrangarh fort from where you can have view of whole city.
  • Siwanchi Gate: This gate is been preserved as being the most traffic intensive place. Now it has been a city bus stop and at the same place, Jodhpur child hospital is there called Janana hospital or ummed hospital and a famous temple of Shani god so the area nearby known as shanishcher ji ka than (place of god Shani). As you walk down the road inside the city at the center is a temple of god Hanuman and few namkin, flower and fruit shops. Down the road, you will find Mochi Bazaar & Jutti Corner where varieties of Rajasthani handmade footwear can be tried out.
